Caribbean Beach Reads - Jumping Ship (Island Hopping Series)

Here's the second great beach read review for the week - from author Janice G. Ross

LOVE, MYSTERY & ADVENTURE

Jumping Ship - the first book in a series of seven "Island Hopping" adventures - starts in Guyana, and future book sequences will include the Caribbean islands of Antigua, Martinique, Barbados, Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago, and St Lucia

"This is Guyana, my Guyana. And no matter where I go, no matter whom I love,
my heart will forever belong to my dear, sweet Guyana." - Janice G. Ross

Travel Note - Guyana is quite an interesting country. Culturally it is more Caribbean and West Indian, and also a member of CARICOM (Caribbean Community and Common Market.) Geographically it is part of the South American continent, and the only English speaking country in South America.

The author's love of her home country Guyana is apparent in Jumping Ship. The vivid descriptions make you feel as though you have stepped into the island colors, smells, and sounds. And to complete the picture Janice adds a bit of the local Guyanese Creole language.

The reader is actually presented with three stories, which at first appear to have no correlation, however these are the timelines which are seamlessly weaved into this tale of love, family drama, mystery and adventure.

Sakkara, the stories main character, is not even born as the story begins, however the mystery that surrounds her Caribbean heritage will send her on an island hopping journey in hopes of discovering her family tree.

Once you realize how the three stories are all related, you settle down for more, and then there's the cliffhanger ending! Yes, it ended far too soon, however this is a seven book series. What will Sakkara will find out about her family? Where did the young lovers go, and what did they do when they left Guyana a generation ago? Will Sakkara find love on her journey? And so many more questions!

Island Hopping: Trinidad & Tobago is set to be released on Valentines Day - February 14, 2014.  Looking forward to the saga!

Brief Q & A with author Janice G. Ross

Question:
When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I always knew that I wanted to write - always! From the first time I started reading British Lit in elementary school and fell in love with Wuthering Heights. I am a deep thinker about what would contemplate life regularly. My method for doing so, even at that age, was through poetry at first. Eventually, I would write stories and share with others. I even kept 2 diaries - one with filled with my regular life and another with wild stories that a young child should not have written.

Question:
How did you come up with the idea for Blog Talk Radio?

My Cultural Cocktails show on Blog Talk Radio combines my love of books and talking. When I read a story, I always try to imagine what the author must have been thinking or going through during their writing. And I am curious about how each person's experiences feed into their talent.

For example, I was born in Guyana, migrated with family to NJ, eventually ended up in DE and even lived in Jamaica for a year & a half. When I write about the Caribbean, I write based on memories, my longings/urges and as a Guyanese American. It's a totally different outlook, than writing as someone that lives there. Each writer has a background that makes their work unique; I enjoy exploring the differences on my show.

Question:
Any travel plans for 2014 or the future?

My goals for 2014 initially included visiting some of the islands that are included in the Island Hopping series; however, I've had to hold off on those journeys for the time being. The majority of my traveling will take place in the U.S. - for promotional sakes.

Author Bio:
Janice was born in Guyana, South America and migrated to the USA in 1980. Although her citizenship certificate now reads the United States of America, she considers herself a citizen of the world. Sure she has not physically been around the world and back, but she’s traveled in her mind and dreams.

Janice is an author. She enjoys writing about social issues and personal experiences. Janice’s debut release was entitled Damaged Girls. She uses the three books in that series to detail the effects of different forms of abuse, discussing issues that are known to be taboo.

Her latest release, Jumping Ship, is a dedication to her country of birth and an introductory novella to the Island Hopping Series  - due out in 2014. It’s poised to be a colorful and emotional experience of life, love and family.

Janice enjoys reading. And is drawn to stories with distinct characters that she can love or hate, characters she can form alliances with or characters that she can swear off and despise. She is also weak for a good cultural tale, preferably in the form of historical fiction. Janice loves to be taken off guard by clever language and settings.

Janice is also a devout supporter and promoter of other authors through social media. She hosts a weekly show, Cultural Cocktails, on the largest social radio network, Blog Talk Radio.
