Antigua Carnival Bringing the Splendour

This years Antigua Carnival's theme is "Bringing the Splendor" which showcases 11 days of festivities including parade of the bands, beauty pageants, colorful costumes, talent shows and the music of Calypso, Steel Drum and Soca.

This is a celebration of emancipation. The carnival's history dates back to August 1, 1834 when slavery was abolished, and the islanders took to the streets to celebrate. Over the century island celebrations were held, however it wasn't until 1957 that the first official Antiguan Carnival organized into what is now a non-stop 11 day carnival.

Carnival takes place in the streets of St. John's, and in Carnival City at the Antigua Recreation Ground (A.R.G) – home of cricket in Antigua.

The biggest carnival event is j'ouvert when the islands brass and steel bands perform. Aside from the major events, Antigua's carnival also includes local concerts, food fairs, and cultural shows.
